Appendix I - Troubleshooting

General

Browser Compatibility

For optimum use of the Linxworks UsedIron, use:

Error Messages

If an error message occurs on your screen:

  1. Click your browser's Back button; this will take you to the previous screen.
  2. Click your browser's Refresh button; this will ensure you have the latest version of the page.
  3. If the error persists, contact your Systems Administrator.

Java Virtual Machine

The Java Virtual Machine must be installed on your computer for the UsedIron system to function properly. This component is included in Microsoft Internet Explorer, although it may be missing from some installations of ver. 6. To install or repair the Java Virtual Machine, visit http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html. Once installed, the Java features on your computer will be restored and even enhanced (with better speed and reliability). As well, the "Use Java 2 for <applet>" option may need to be enabled in Internet Explorer; to set this option, use your browser's pull-down menu to select Tools >> Internet Options, then click the Advanced tab.

Logging In

Linxworks UsedIron is case sensitive (i.e., "mypassword", "MyPassword", and "MYPASSWORD" are not treated as equivalent text). Be sure that your Caps Lock key is off when logging in; if your keyboard has a Caps Lock indicator light, it should be off. Be sure to enter your username and password with the appropriate capitalization.

Web page isn't opening

If a page you are trying to view is taking too long to open:

  1. Click the Stop button on your browser.
  2. Try reloading the web page again.
  3. If you get a message that a web page cannot be displayed or you want to make sure you have the latest version of the page, click your browser's Refresh button.

E-mail

To e-mail an equipment listing:
  1. Perform an Equipment Search and open the specific listing you would like to send.
  2. Click the E-mail This Page link near the top of the page.
  3. Enter your customer's e-mail address and click Send Listing.

Important: To view a detailed listing by using the hyperlink in an e-mailed Inventory Report, the user must be using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. This function will not work from web-based e-mail such as Hotmail.

To use this feature, your e-mail program must be configured to send mail in HTML format, as explained below.

To change e-mail format in Outlook:
  1. From Outlook's pull-down menu, select Tools >> Options.
  2. Click the Mail Format tab.
  3. In the Message Format area, select "HTML" from the "Send in this message format" drop-down list.
  4. Click the Apply button.
  5. Click the OK button.

Appendix II - Printing From a Browser

Printing Pictures/Graphics

If images are not appearing correctly in printed versions of your equipment listings, brochures, and/or quotes your browser's printing settings may need to be changed.

To optimize your picture quality:
  1. From your browser's pull-down menu, select Tools >> Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Scroll down to the "Printing" section.
  4. Ensure "Print Background Colors & Images" is checked.
  5. Click Apply (if the button has become enabled).
  6. Click OK.

Removing Headers and Footers

To give your documents a more professional look, ensure that the web address or URL, date, time, etc. are not printed as headers and/or footers on the pages. This can be done by modifying the Page Setup settings of your browser. Since changing these settings will affect all web pages printed from your browser, you should jot down the current settings or save them in a text file so that they can be restored at a later date, if necessary.

To remove headers/footers when printing web pages:
  1. Use your browsers pull-down menu to select File >> Page Setup.
  2. Delete anything in the header or footer fields (e.g., &w&u&b&d&t...).
  3. Click OK.

Important: Changing or deleting the Header/Footer setting will affect all web pages printed from your browser.

Appendix III - Sending a Web Page by E-mail

Microsoft Internet Explorer is closely integrated with Outlook and Outlook Express. This allows you to send web pages by e-mail and control the format in which the page is delivered. An HTML message can display the entire page with the e-mail window, or plain-text e-mail can include a clickable link to open the page in a browser window.

To send a web page by e-mail:
  1. Open your e-mail program (Outlook or Outlook Express).
  2. Use the program's pull-down menu to select Tools >> Options.
  3. Click the Mail Format tab.
  4. To display the web page in the e-mail message window, set "Message format" to "HTML"; otherwise, the e-mail will include a link to the web page which will open in a browser when clicked.
  5. Click Apply, then click OK.
  6. Open your browser to the web page you want to send.
  7. From your browser's pull-down menu, select File >> Send >> Page by E-mail. This will launch your e-mail program.
  8. When your e-mail program opens, the web page you are sending should appear in the message window.
  9. Enter the recipient's e-mail address.
  10. Click Send.

Appendix IV - Photo Upload Problems
